Meet Amy

Ms. Benya is a Houston-native and joined the Houston office as an Associate in April 2020. Her practice focus areas are representing school districts, junior college districts, and charter schools in general governance and compliance, policy review and development, employment, open government, contracts, procurement, and facilities and construction matters. Prior to joining KBS, Ms. Benya served as Assistant General Counsel for Aldine ISD, and as Senior Assistant General Counsel for Lone Star College System District, both in Houston. While at Lone Star College, Ms. Benya also served a six-month appointment as Interim Associate Vice Chancellor of Facilities and Construction in which she helped to oversee and manage all construction for the College under a multi-million-dollar Bond Program. Ms. Benya earned the distinction of National Diversity Council’s Top 50 General Counsel for 2019.

Ms. Benya received her Bachelor of Arts Degree, magna cum laude, in Government from Nicholls State University in 2005, in which she played on the University’s NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Team from 2002-2005, and was recognized as Outstanding Freshman Female Athlete of the Year. Ms. Benya graduated, cum laude, from Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Texas Southern University. She served on the Thurgood Marshall Law Review Executive Board as Executive Articles Editor.

Ms. Benya is a member of the State Bar of Texas School Law Section, Texas Association of School Boards Council of School Attorneys, the Downtown Law Group professional organization, and the American Heart Association’s Young at Heart professional organization.
